Project Notes
My name is Andrew La Pointe, I am a senior at Highlands. I am receiving my BFA in May with an amazing group of students. This is my second Seabury Project. This opportunity has allowed me to further explore my own brand of illustration and has helped me come away from school with a very valuable set of tools. I have many opportunities ahead of me because of the opportunities that have been afforded to me.
The project overall is an exercise in fabric design, but the motivation and concept behind the work are layered in my personal life. The basis of the project is a children’s book that I began working on nearly ten years ago. The narrative of the book takes a look at families who live apart from one another. I used desert animals, native to the area I was living at the time, to tell the story of parents and children who live under the same desert skies as one another yet don’t always sleep in the same home. The book is called “Where We Live”.
I chose linoleum block carving as the medium for the book because it was a peaceful process and it gave me a sense of intention. I felt like the lines I was producing were personal representations that I could offer to my children as a sort of story in and of themselves. This basis is carried over into this Seabury Project because it is unfinished in my head and I wanted to play with the theme in a different medium.
I chose the couch as a medium because it is the location of many storytelling and book reading moments in my life and in the lives of my girls. The patterns I created for this couch and chair are new and one of a kind. There is something precious about unique things. They only exist in one place at one time, while at the same time their uniqueness creates more vivid memories. This is the way in which my original story of children living far from parents compares to that idea. Families have something unique that can be experienced even at a distance.
