About Andrew

My background is primarily in cooking but much of my free time has been spent exploring and participating in the arts.  I have assisted artists and studied many ways of making and designing.  I have made small run silk screens for various artists and musicians, I have practiced wood burning and linoleum cutting and I have explored mark making and applied it to my work as a kitchen worker.  Design has always been a big part of my life.

How to Cook An Octopus

In my first semester back to school after having worked in kitchens full time for fifteen years my brother passed away.  My brother  introduced me to cooking, art, literature, music, and adventure.  In his early years of cooking he wrote avidly for many different publications and on many different topics.  His intention was to publish a Japanese cookbook, titled How to Cook an Octopus.

At the funeral I began thinking about the book that he never finished.  I talked to a friend of his about the possibility of publishing his book.   When I returned to New Mexico I saw a poster announcing the Seabury Award.  As I researched this award I realized that this book project could be a suitable project.   This project was perfect, it involved bookmaking, art, and cooking.  The marriage of these things seemed like an exciting proposal.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity that has been afforded me and I am very proud of the work I was able to accomplish with the help of the Media Arts Department at Highlands.  I am also very thankful for the Seabury Foundation and the boost it has given me into a field that I was excited to learn about. The freedom to make a project that was both personal and educational allowed me to channel my creativity into a beautiful finished project.
